Canon History: The Story of a Soldier

Game History: Suffice it to say, Laguna's entry into the Terminal was...bumpy at best. After having managed to wander outside of the very city he was looking for upon exiting the chamber he'd awoken in, he was quickly found by Squall Leonhart and Seifer Almasy from his world who quickly reigned him in and quickly set the clumsy soldier on his path to as relatively normal a life can get considering he'd been randomly pulled into a computer world without any warning.

To make matters worse, only a short time afterwards the town was plunged into a blackout and the residences were forced to contend with wild Digimon who were roaming the streets; upon hearing a broadcast from a fellow townsperson telling of a safe haven, he set off with his Salamon, Raine, towards the coordinates he was given. Unfortunately he never made it and was forced to contend with an aggressive Digimon out of town with disastrous results. He escaped with his life...but his left arm had been completely severed, leaving him in rough shape as Squall dragged him back to his room to heal.

This event left Laguna shaken; having finally come to a realization he was up against enemies he could only hope to stun, his confidence took a serious hit and it seemed like it would stay that way...until he met the person who would be his rock throughout his stay there.

Saori Nakagawa, seemingly a simple woman who happened to be manning a makeshift bar at a party Laguna had been invited to, the two struck a bond that night that would not only bring Laguna back to his usual cheery self, it would also change him. Not only did his confidence return, he also began to feel familiar feelings bloom in him as he spent more time with Saori; she was brave, confident, and reliable, just like Kiros. She was wise, understanding, and responsible like Ward. She was adorable, loving, caring...and just a little scary when upset, just like Raine. He could be himself around her without care or worry, he could be honest and expose his true feelings instead of hiding behind a smile.

Saori was a person who he could count on to watch his back, someone he could share his happiness and his pain with. She didn't just give him confidence...

She gave him hope.

That hope only served to shine through when a gigantic Digimon attacked the town, prompting the soldier into action; despite his opponent being easily 60 stories in height, he took the fight to him with his grapple hook and with the help of Saori and the combined efforts of their Digimon, they were able to help distract the behemoth in time for the rest of the town to evacuate.

Even after moving, the two began to live together; through thick and thin and even the heartbreaking task of confessing the fact that he was Squall's father, something he's not had a full resolution to, Saori managed to keep him above water...until everything went black and Laguna was left to a dreamless sleep once more. Until now, that is.

Personality: Laguna is what one might call a man of many faces, though most of those faces tend to be rather goofy or even downright nonsensical at times; even so, he is a kindhearted and generous individual whom his squad mates Kiros and Ward generally look to whenever a difficult decision must be made. His generosity even managed to cross generations in the form of a unique race of monsters known as Moombas; as during his stay in Shumi Village, he befriended a group of them and attempted to teach them to speak, though they only word they managed to learn was "Laguna". This would prove helpful during Squall's time in the D-District Prison as the Moombas working there were able to recognize Squall as Laguna's son through smelling his blood, proof of this being as they gathered around the injured Squall proclaiming "Laguna! Laguna!". With that connection made in their mind, the Moombas mobilized themselves to help Squall and his friends escape the prison.

Laguna himself tends to lean towards the side of optimism in almost every situation, preferring to search for a silver lining in the clouds rather than be put off of a task; such as when he decided to continue on his patrol in Centra despite having brought the wrong map, landing his group in the wrong location. However, if he takes the time to stop and think about the dangers of a situation, he can indeed become hesitant much like the time he threw Kiros and Ward over the edge of a cliff in order to save them from advancing enemy soldiers, only to himself take pause in following after realizing how high the cliff actually was. Regardless though, if a situation has to be followed through to the end or if his friends or loved ones are in danger, Laguna will easily push aside his doubts and fears in order to get done what needs to get done; an easy example of this being when he faced down and trapped the Sorceress Adel, an immensely powerful individual, just to get rescue his step-daughter Ellone.

Because of his over abundance of optimism, Laguna tends to come off as silly or even socially awkward; such as his habit of making up words and phrases if he can't think of what the actual ones are or his unique trait of developing crippling leg cramps when approached by beautiful women to the extent he is forced to his knees and will even limp briefly afterwards. While this often makes him the butt of jokes coming from Kiros and Ward, his unique personality did ultimately attract the attention of his first love, Julia Heartilly and even his eventual wife Raine Loire.

When it comes to thinking on the fly, Laguna is very much a do first ask questions later sort of individual; often throwing himself into a situation with little to no forethought which Kiros and Ward will often berate him for, such as when he decided to investigate the Centra Excavation Site despite both Kiros and Ward commenting that it would be better for them to turn back. He does this however so that he doesn't have time to second guess himself and therefore hesitate. He has however displayed a decent aptitude for coming up with effective plans off the top of his head, such as tampering with a few hatches in order to hinder the chase of pursuing Estharian Soldiers and triggering explosions in the excavation site that served the same purpose.

All in all, Laguna is a man with a firm sense of justice and refuses to back down when it comes to making sure that the people he cares about are alright. He may be a bit bumbling and clumsy, but at his core, he truly is a good man who looks for nothing more than to enjoy his life and watch his friends and family do the same.

During his time in the Terminal, Laguna's confidence has taken a little bit of a hit and as such, he's more prone to thinking his actions through. Not by much, but he'll at least make an effort now; after being berated by Saori for throwing himself recklessly into danger without considering how those who cared about him would feel if he got hurt as well as his previous run-in's with Digimon, he began to put more care into his actions, although he still has a tendency to act first in do or die situations.

As well, through the prodding of his friends in the terminal, he's become more honest with his feelings. He will still meet most situations with a smile and enthusiasm, but he is more apt to be open with his actual feelings rather than to joke them off as unimportant. He found that after revealing his fatherhood, bottling those feelings up had become almost destructive to him and promised Saori that he wouldn't keep anything like that in again.

Third-Person Sample: Light. The first thing that filtered into Laguna's addled senses was an obnoxious amount of light that he tried desperately to shoo away before placing a hand to his forehead with a groan; he couldn't remember what he'd been doing the night before...but he suspected that it had to do with a large quantity of alcohol if his head was pounding like this. It took him a good few minutes, but eventually the nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right was enough to rouse the man from where he was lying as he slowly propped his aching body up into a sitting position; his hand falling away from his grimacing face to reveal...a forest.

A forest?! Laguna's eyes snapped fully open as he scrambled to his feet, looking around in all directions as he tried to figure out what exactly was going on; was this some kind of weird joke Kiros and Ward had played on him? "What's with this weird clothing?" he muttered under his breath, looking the strange green garb he found himself wearing. Was this part of the prank? It felt oddly fitting somehow, as if these clothes had been tailor made for him and if that was the case...that was going a little far for a joke.

He was so concerned with the situation that he didn't even notice something in the middle of the forest road until he'd fallen face first over it, causing him to sputter as dirt got into his mouth. He rolled over and cast an indignant gaze around for the offending object...only for his eyes to land on a well crafted bow and quiver that had seemingly been abandoned in the middle of the forest. With a curious raising of his eyebrow, Laguna pulled himself towards it and grasped the wooden handle, finding it to rest easier in his hand than his old service weapons ever had. Compelled by curiosity, he took an arrow from the quiver and stood up, letting the arrow slide against the bowstring as he drew it with ease and let fly towards a nearby tree. It hit right where he was aiming, much to his amazement considering he'd never once before picked a bow up in his life, let alone shot one with that kind of accuracy.

Now more curious than ever, Laguna pulled the quiver up and dusted it off before looping it into his belt and stringing the bow across his back; he still had no idea where he was and if he was able to use the weapon...well, it was better than his bare hands. With that in mind, he set off down the dirt path in front of him. "Alright, let's see if we can find Saori, Raine, and Kiros, then I can start putting this puzzle together from there." he said with a smile, slamming his fist into an open palm. For all his exuberance though, he had a feeling it was going to be one of those mornings. Call it a hunch.

Mognet Sample:

To Saori

Well, I figure this might be a little...awkward, all things considered, what with some strange guy coming out of nowhere claiming to know you and all, but just ask yourself this. Would someone knowing you from a different universe really be the strangest thing that's happened to you here? Putting that aside though, even if it is strange, I'd still like to know you here too, if that's alright of course. If you wouldn't mind it...maybe we could grab a bite for lunch and just talk? Either way, I hope to hear from you soon.
